How does SmartPOP MailCatcher Service work?
The SmartPOP MailCatcher service is a tool designed to catch your E-Mail in the event your mail server or Internet connection goes down. If such an event happens our mail server will begin collecting your E-Mail and hold on to it until your mail server comes back online (our server will only hold mail for 7 days. After 7 days the mail is automatically deleted and lost forever). When your mail server comes back online, our server will detect its presence and initiate a transfer of the mail just as if it were sent directly to you from the original sender. Your mail server then places the lost mail in the appropriate mail boxes.

Special Note: The SmartPOP MailCatcher service is not designed to be used as your primary mail server. This service is to be used only in an emergency basis when you lose your Internet service or your mail server goes down. To reduce traffic on our servers we have deployed a rule on the SmartPOP MailCatcher server which will remove attachments form mail collected that are over 75K. If an attachment is removed, there will be a message appended to the message telling you it was removed. When your server comes back online you can mail the sender and ask them to resend the attachment.

How to set up the SmartPOP MailCatcher Service.

1) Create an A record (mail.yourdomain.com) See creating an A record.
2) Create an MX 1 record pointing to your mail A record, this tells other mail servers to try you first. If your server is up you'll receive the mail directly. See creating an MX record.
3) Create an MX 10 record pointing to our mail server smartpop.myserver.org. This is a very important step, this will tell other mail servers where to send mail in the event that the MX 1 (your mail server) server is down.

If your SmartPOP server does catch mail for you we will automatically try to send the mail to whatever you have set for your Mail A record. It is very important that you create this record.

Can I set up the SMartPop MailCatcher to relay my SMTP and POP traffic?

Not at this time. We do plan on offering this service in the near future.

How do I get E-Mail that was picked up by the SmartPOP MailCatcher Service?

There is no intervention required on your part. Our SmartPOP server will automatically try to send the lost mail to the server which your mail A record points to. This should be mail.yourdomain.com.
